Hannah Martensen - For the Love of the Game/
Youngest Again!
Hannah Martensen, who is spending the winter at training camp with the Ottawa-Nepean Canadians, is off to Hong Kong to play on the "North Stars" women's baseball team in the Phoenix Cup 2008 Hong Kong Women's Baseball Tournament 14-17 Feb 2008.
At age 14, Hannah will be the youngest player on the North Stars" team which is made up of women from the USA and Canada with four guest players from India.
In August 2007, Hannah was the youngest player on the Ontario Girls Bantam (16U) team at the Canadian National Baseball tournament in Quebec City where she earned 2 game MVP awards and finished with a .461 batting average.
Martensen continues to play in Ottawa with Pinecrest Little League and is participating in winter training with the Ottawa-Nepean Canadians baseball club. "Playing on boys teams keeps me sharp", says Martensen.
Martensen only started playing on all-girls teams 2 years ago when she successfully tried out for an International team to play at Dreams Park in Cooperstown. The "Sparks" were the only all girls team in a 96-team tournament, where Martensen scored the "go ahead" run for the team to make history as the first all-girls team to win a game at Dreams Park.
Martensen went on that summer to play on the Ontario Girls Pee Wee team at the Nationals in Orillia where the team won the Silver medal.
She has also played at Disney in Orlando and at Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. Her goal is to represent Canada as a member of the women's National baseball team as soon as she can "make the team". She hopes to be selected once again to the Ontario Bantam team this year.
Playing baseball is as essential to Hannah as breathing.
Information for the Hong Kong tournament can be found on the Hong Kong Baseball website.
