16Us Romp to Victory in Baseball Quebec Tournament
06 Jul 2009
The Canadians 16U team won the Quebec Baseball Midget AAA Tournament in Montreal this weekend in convincing fashion.
The squad opened the weekend campaign with a 9-2 win over the Lac St. Louis Cardinals under damp conditions in Fairview. Connor Sullivan allowed one run on one hit over 4 1/3 innings of work. Tyler Cook and Braeden Moffatt contributed with multiple hit efforts and 3RBIs a piece.
The Canadians then moved on to the stadium in LaSalle to face Cornwall. The two teams met one week earlier with the Black Sox coming out on top. This time the Canadians jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The game was suspended late in the evening due to a curfew at the park but it resumed Sunday morning with the Canadians picking up where they left off and clinching the 8-3 win. Brendan Saville was dominant in the outing throwing five complete and allowing one run on four hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Chad Keohane drove in two runs while Moffatt, Jamie Burritt and Pat Hurtubise contributed offensively.
The third game of the weekend saw the Canadians drop their only decision against the Quebec Condors. Despite putting up good offensive numbers, the team allowed the Condors to steal the game 11-10. Pat Hurtubise, Braeden Moffat and Cole Kaiser put in a good effort on the mound, scattering 8 hits over 7 innings. But a few baserunning and defensive errors cost the Canadians. Julian Silvestri, Chad Keohane, Shawn Green and Drew McCormick had multiple hit games. Russell Gow was solid in left field and showed great patience at the plate reaching base three times and scoring a run.
The Canadians squared-off against the Montreal Royals in their semi-final game. Julian Silvestri took to the mound on three days' rest and shut the Royals out over five innings allowing only two hits while striking out six. Drew McCormick finished off the game by allowing one run on one hit and striking out two with the tying run on third to earn the save. Kyle Craig was brilliant defensively going deep in the hole at short to throw out runners while contributing on offense with a double to the centre field fence and scoring a run in the first.
In the final against the Montreal Orioles the Canadians left no doubt by exploding for 11 runs in the fourth and sealing the 13-2 win. Connor Sullivan went four plus, allowing two runs while Drew McCormick came in to mop-up and get the last Orioles hitter to fly out to Gow in right field. Ben Milinkovich continued his impressive on base streak. He reached safely in three of four attempts in this game for a total of twelve out of twenty in the tournament.
The 16Us are hot heading into Columbus, OH for the Buckeye Elite Showcase Tournament this week winning ten of their last twelve and outscoring opponents 136-43.
