Former Pro Signs as ONC Pitching Co-Ordinator
08 Dec 2009
The Ottawa Nepean Canadians are pleased to announce former professional player Steve Walsh has joined the organization as pitching co-ordinator for both the 16U and 18U teams for the 2010 season.
Steve played his minor baseball in Orleans (1986-93) as a member of the Little League Red Sox. He played two seasons with the Ottawa Nationals Midgets and a year in what is now the Premier Baseball League of Ontario with the Ontario Blue Jays in 1996, a team which was Connie Mack World Series Finalists. From the Blue Jays, he was drafted in the 31st round of the Major League draft by the Kansas City Royals and chose to attend Triton Community College (NJCAA - Div 1) on a full scholarship in 1996.
The following spring, he signed with the Royals and spent three years in the organization, in the Class A Gulf Coast League. He later signed and pitched with the Massachusetts Mad Dogs in 2000 to play in the Nothern League and eventually the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Quebec City Capitales in 2000 and 2001.
Walsh has recently returned to Ottawa and is a real estate agent.
"I think this is a huge plus for all our young pitchers," said Don Campbell, the Canadians 18U coach and Director of Baseball. "In hindsight, I think Steve would say that one of his disadvantages growing up in the Ottawa area was a lack of expertise among coaches in the area of pitching. He might even suggest that at some points of his pro career, there were times he wished he had a better person to lean on in developing as a pitcher."
Steve will begin his time with the Canadians in the New Year at the ONC Winter Training Camp and is looking forward to contributing through the 2010 season and beyond.
